What is microneedling?

During a microneedling procedure, a pen-like device glides across your skin to poke tiny holes in your skin’s surface. The holes are invisible to the eye, but trigger your body’s wound-healing reactions to rush growth factors to the area. Your skin seeks to repair itself, and as a result, you develop stronger, smoother, and more radiant skin.

Your skin increases its collagen production in response to the microneedling procedure. Collagen is key in giving your skin a healthy, radiant look and the strength to look lifted and smooth.

What are the benefits of microneedling?

In addition to stimulating your body to create smoother, more healthful skin, microneedling also makes your skin temporarily more receptive to serums and gels that further build collagen and boost your skin’s health.

Microneedling is especially effective for treating:

  • Wrinkles
  • Melasma and other hyperpigmentation
  • Enlarged pores
  • Dull skin tone
  • Acne scars or other scarring

Because microneedling stimulates collagen production, you also achieve tighter skin to create a tauter look. It can also be effective in reducing the appearance of crepey skin, especially around the neck.

Does microneedling hurt or require a long downtime?

Most people find the microneedling process quite tolerable. Dr. Kaufmann or your technician applies a topical numbing cream prior to treatment. She then sets the treatment depth depending on your skin complaints and aesthetic goals. Usually, the depth ranges from 0.5-2.5 millimeters.

After your session, you may have some pinkness and mild scabbing. These side effects usually fade within a couple of days. You may want to avoid scheduling any special events, but you don’t have to schedule official downtime. In the 24 hours after the treatment, you can apply makeup to hide any temporary side effects.

Who should consider microneedling?

Microneedling works for all skin types. If you have skin issues that don’t respond well to at-home treatments, consider this procedure. Discuss your skin concerns with Dr. Kaufmann to find out if microneedling alone or combined with other treatments is best for your skin complaints.
